Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Given that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s a great time to educate yourself and others about the signs, symptoms, and risk factors for this disease. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the United States, after skin cancer. MD Labs wants to ensure you and your loved ones are familiar with the important facts surrounding the disease that impacts so many of our lives.
Signs and Symptoms of Breast Cancer
There are a few different types of breast cancer, but the most common type is ductal carcinoma, which begins in the milk ducts. The symptoms of breast cancer vary depending on the type and stage of the disease, but some of the common signs you should be aware of are:
- A lump or mass in the breast that feels hard or firm
- Thickening or changes in texture of the skin on the breast
- Changes in the size or shape of the nipple
- Fluid discharge from the nipple (not milk)
- Inverted nipple (turned inward instead of outward)
If you notice any of these changes, it’s important to see a doctor right away so that you can get prompt treatment. Early detection is key when it comes to fighting breast cancer.
Risk Factors for Breast Cancer
There are many factors that can increase your risk for developing breast cancer. Some of these factors are out of your control, such as your age, gender, and family history. But there are also lifestyle choices that you can make that will lower your risk, such as exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight.
Other risk factors for breast cancer include:
- Personal history of certain cancers
- Alcohol use
- Use of certain hormones (including menopausal hormone therapy)
Keep these facts in mind during Breast Cancer Awareness Month—and all year long—to help reduce your risk of developing this disease. If you have any concerns about your breast health, don’t hesitate to talk to your doctor. You can also visit cancer.org for more information about breast cancer prevention and treatment options.
